Booglinee - The Musical (A filmed staged reading): Non-Union, Volunteer

Audition Non-Union Volunteer

Booglinee is a two-act musical comedy about Kai, a curious young engineer who joins Silicon Valley's hottest fictional tech company to help support his family — and discovers its efficiency-obsessed leadership hiding an AI initiative with real human consequences. With an eccentric group of coworkers, Kai must decide how much he's willing to risk to expose it. Absurd workplace satire, character comedy, and sincere emotional storytelling across 24 original songs.

Characters

Track 1 — Kai

Male-character, 20s–30s • Singing [S] • High vocal workload; contemporary musical-theater sound

Lead. A curious young engineer and compulsive tinkerer whose desire to support his family collides with his growing suspicion that Booglinee is harming the people it claims to serve. Earnest, funny, and emotionally open.

Track 2 — Jordan

Male-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate-to-high workload

Kai's thoughtful teammate and closest workplace ally — a pragmatic counterweight to Kai's idealism, with dry humor and grounded emotional presence.

Track 3 — Tom

Male-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate workload; contrasting character voices helpful

A cranky but highly capable Booglinee veteran who has survived every reorganization and reluctantly becomes one of Kai's mentors.

Track 4 — Mira

Female-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • High featured workload

A brilliant scientist whose belief in ethical innovation puts her in direct conflict with Booglinee's leadership. Intellectually formidable and increasingly willing to fight.

Track 5 — Figdar

Any gender character • Singing [S] • Featured antagonist material

Booglinee's chillingly efficient COO and the musical's central antagonist. Charismatic enough to command a room, ruthless enough to treat human consequences as spreadsheet errors. Requires authority, precision, and dark comic instincts.

Track 6 — Chad

Male-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate workload

A flashy salesperson who thrives on ego and success.

Track 7 — Sean / Guard / Eager Booglinee Employee

Male-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate workload

Sean: one of Booglinee's two HR representatives; plus the county-jail Guard and an eager Booglinee employee.

Track 8 — Cheryl / Lawyer / Exec 2 / Booglinee Employee

Female-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate workload

Cheryl: Booglinee's second HR representative — polished corporate language with comic bite; plus a Booglinee lawyer, a cold-blooded exec, and a Booglinee employee.

Track 9 — Evan

Male-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Light-to-moderate vocal workload

A deadpan coworker quietly betting that Kai won't last.

Track 10 — Brad / Kai's Dad / Booglinee Security

Male-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate workload

Brad: a struggling employee chewed up by Booglinee's performance machinery who becomes the disgruntled ex-employee secretly documenting the company's malfeasance — comic vulnerability over genuine desperation. Kai's Dad: a loving parent who just wants Kai to be happy.

Track 11 — Kai's Mom / Federal Agent / IT Woman / Exec 1

Female-character, age flexible • Optional singing [OS] • Primarily acting; no solo singing required; strong versatility across contrasting character voices

Maternal warmth plus multiple contrasting authority figures.

Track 12 — Taylor / Police / Judge

Female-character, age flexible • Singing [S] • Moderate workload

Kai's risk-averse, sharp-tongued teammate — plus broad supporting comedy as a police officer and a courtroom judge.

Track 13 — Zach / Booglinee New Hire / Exec 3

Male-character, age flexible • Optional singing [OS] • Character-comedy focus

A politically agile middle manager who survives by agreeing with whoever spoke most recently; plus a wide-eyed new hire and an exec.

Doubling follows the script's Character Mapping Recommendation. [S] = singing role; [OS] = optional singing role. Productions with larger casts may split tracks.

Sunny — Booglinee's founding CEO — will be assigned to Track 3 or Track 11 depending on casting.

Paid covers: we expect to cast two or more paid covers for selected principal tracks. Covers receive the same compensation structure as principals — see Compensation below — and participate fully in the company read-through, assigned-track preparation, and all three studio dates, performing only if activated; a cover may not end up performing in the September 6 presentation. Track assignments are specified before acceptance.
