BERKELEY PLAYHOUSE is accepting AEA and NON-UNION submissions for its 2026-2027 Mainstage Season production of COME FROM AWAY. Book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. Come From Away is a musical based on the true story of when the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, became a haven for diverted plane passengers on September 11, 2001. What started as an average day in the isolated town turned into a life-changing event when planes carrying thousands of people from all over the world were told to land in Gander amidst the chaos and confusion of the 9/11 attacks. The residents of Gander – referred to as “islanders” – welcomed the stranded travelers – called “come from aways” – with shelter, music, an open bar, and acknowledgment of being one big global family. Throughout the days, residents and strangers alike become friends, sharing stories of similarities and differences, and finding appreciation for both. Connections are made for life, and Gander is put on the map for being instrumental in aiding the world in a historic time of turmoil.

Berkeley Playhouse is a community centered, non-profit organization producing high quality musical theater. Non-union performers over the age of 18 are issued a Volunteer Performer Agreement with a reimbursement to assist in covering travel costs, meals and other expenses during the production. Berkeley Playhouse is deeply invested in reflecting our diverse Bay Area community on stage. We encourage performers of all backgrounds, identities, sizes and abilities, to submit. At this time we are only considering actors who actively live and work in the SF Bay Area.
