Callbacks
- Callbacks to be scheduled Callbacks are on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 by invitation. Don't worry if you are not invited for callbacks. It only means that we need a second look at certain actors together in order to make final casting decisions.
- Callback details to be emailed out.
CASTING INFORMATION
Casting
- Actors cast, including ensemble, will be contacted directly by the director to confirm acceptance within 3 days of the callbacks.
- Actors not cast will be contacted via email after the show is cast.
- Please do not announce your casting on social media until a formal announcement is posted by Onstage and you receive a welcome email.
- A small travel stipend to be provided.

Rehearsal Schedule & Potential Conflicts
Rehearsals are typically Monday through Thursday beginning May 11th through June 4th (7p-9 p).
Note: Accommodations and preferences are taken into consideration when developing the schedule
as much as possible.
Be sure to indicate conflicts on your audition application if known.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Frederick – Age 30-50 (Plays 34), Black man
Older Douglass/Elder Statesmen – authoritative clear orator’s voice, poised, dignified Male Voice in the Dark
Freddy – Age 16-26 (Plays ages 5 to 20 in narrative), Black Man
Younger Douglass – energetic, agile, youthful, strong, resilient, resourceful
Freddy’s Grandmother/Narrator – Age 55-75, Older Black Woman
Also member of Black Chorus, Elderly, warm, wise, world weary, inner strength
Anna – Age 18-30, Black Woman (plays 20-25)
Young Frederick’s wife/young black woman Narrator, Member of Black Chorus
Strong, dynamic, determined, clear articulate voice

AUDITION SIDES
For your audition, prepare a monologue of your choice of no more than one minute.
In addition to your prepared monologue, there will be a cold reading from the script. Sides provided at auditions.
