Spirals and Dirt, an original musical by Sean P. Breen, directed by Brandon Joseph: Two Staged Readings scheduled for Monday, February 16, 2026 in San Francisco

 Four 20-something friends leaf through a scrapbook and reflect on childhood experiences. The path is seldom straight--it may be obscure, dirty, curving/swerving.  Life gives us moments where we become orchids or dahlias or...? In the end, the four friends recognize that you must be true to yourself. We all need time, and dirt, (and perhaps a tango!) to bloom.

Characters

All actors will be singing in ensemble scenes. Movement/dance experience would be helpful. 

Peter-a male in kindergarten, middle school, and early adulthood, he writes in spirals, sings 2 songs (1 solo, 1quartet); 

Lina- a female in kindergarten, middle school, and early adulthood,  she has vision impairment/wears thick glasses, sings 3 songs (1 solo, 1 quartet); she also plays the role of Jimsy, one of the custodians, who is very proud of their work, sings 1 song twice (1 solo, 1 co-lead).

Burtie-any identity, in kindergarten, middle school, and early adulthood, lives a grungy lifestyle, sings 3 songs (1 co-lead, 1 quartet, 1 solo in Irish accent)

Louis-any identity, in kindergarten, middle school, and early adulthood, lives a clean lifestyle, sings 3 songs (1 co-lead, 1 quartet, 1 solo in Scottish accent)

Ms. Retta-a female kindergarten teacher and a learning specialist who loves linguistics and is not so sure about teaching, sings 1 song (1 solo), will also play the following roles:  Ms. Wright, a science teacher who loves spirals; Georgina, a middle school student, sings 1 song  (1 co-lead), and Tobi, a middle school student sings 1 song (1 solo in a British accent).

Mr. Majick-any identity, an educational-support product salesperson, who aims to sell Peter and his parent a solution to spiral writing, sings 1 song (1 solo), and will play Jamesy, one of the custodians, with 1 spoken solo, and 1 song (1 co-lead)    

Mr. Todara-an older male who uses a cane, is a reluctant school administrator who used to dance tango (1 spoken solo); will also play the narrator, and may dance!

Gerhard-any identity, a parent of Peter, sings 1 song (1 solo); will also play Gregory, a middle school student, sings 1 song (1 solo), and Johanson, a middle school teacher

Audition material to include: 16-32 bars of a musical ballad of your choice (bring a piano chord score with you to audition), in addition to the material we will email you based on the chosen role.  For any key change, please email Barbara Burgel before 11/21/25. Barbara.burgel@gmail.com 

Rehearsals are scheduled on the following 2026 dates from 5-7PM at Grace Cathedral, exact location TBA: 

Mon, Jan 12, Wed, Jan 14, Wed, Jan 21, Mon, Jan 26, Wed, Jan 28, Mon, Feb 2, Wed, Feb 4, Mon, Feb 9, Wed, Feb 11, 2026. Light snacks provided

Final rehearsal and two performances on Mon, Feb 16 from 11AM-8:30PM, with performances at 2PM and 6:30PM.  Lunch and dinner provided.
